Web Hosting

I'm looking for some help and and advice on web site hosting.

I have my own domain name, but this is all new to me and I need some help on getting a site up and running.

I've noticed that there are a lot of free services out there, and the others range from pretty cheap to very expensive.

What are the sort of things I should be looking for?

Can anybody recommend anything?

What kind of site? a blog? just static pages? an e-commerce (shopping cart) site?...

What are the sort of things I should be looking for?
Mostly reliability, customer support and features, and, of course, price.

Can anybody recommend anything?
I use bluehost.com to host my blog. I have been satisfied with them so far.

Thanks Eddie.

I'm looking at setting up an Oracle Newbies website. It will be different to the blog as I'm hoping to be able to put scripts, papers, user guides, presentations etc. on there.

That's the intial thoughts anyway.
I want something that I can start up that is fairly simple and straight forward, but can develop as I get more ideas!

Hi Lisa,
first of all I'm really excited to see how your blog will develop. I'm working with Oracle now for 8 years. 4 as a developer and 4 as a DBA and there is no day where I don't learn anything new about Oracle so I see myself also as a newbie.

For building up a website I would recommend to take a look at available free CMS like eg.
http://www.phpnuke.org/
http://www.mamboserver.com/

They are really easy to setup up and use and all you need is a Apache, PHP and MySql.

I can recommend icdsoft (http://www.icdsoft.com). Good price, great support. If you anticipate very heavy traffic to your site, there might be better choices, but they've been good for me.

Anyone with a website is going to suggest their own hosts, I would have thought... so I'll do the same!

Take a trip to http://www.lunarpages.com, and have a look at their US$7.95 per month "Shuttle" plan. (I realise you're in the UK, not the US, but I'm in Australia and even with foreign exchange fees, their deal turns out cheaper than pretty much anything I could get locally).

You get 1 gigabyte of disk space (expandable for free to 3GB), 100GB of monthly bandwidth (and these are huge allowances). FTP access is good, support have been helpful, and they were very good about domain name registration when I first transferred to them. (If it's your first website, then they throw in a new one for free). I don't recall the last time I had downtime with them, if it's ever actually happened!

I certainly don't mind recommending them. (And no, I don't have shares in them or anything!)

If you can wait a short while, i'm sure there will be loads of hosts offering Oracle Express ( thats the database not the Warehouse thing that was released a few years ago ) as a backend database soon, i'm sure you'd rather have an oracle backend rather than mySql ?, You could even then build your site using HTML db too...

I'd recommend www.wiserhosting.com they are based in the UK, so good from a support point of view, they have always responded to support requests in a timely fashion and in fact even notify me when the server goes down etc.

It's also cheap just £25 a year for their starter package which is more than big enough to host a decent sized site. I for example am running www.mysqldevelopment.com on that package and we so far this year have had over 1/4 million hits.

Unless you have loads of pictures you don't need much disk space at all.

Let me know if you need any info on how mysqldevelopment was built as it seems in a similar vein to what you want to do.
